During a recent restaurant job, I approached a “nuclear” table; Mom, Dad and two kids. The kids had caught my eye while I was at another table.

As I approached the table I noticed Mom and Dad were talking about the menu. Both kids were glued to their electronic games.

“So who wants a balloon?” I asked.20110318 - birthday hat named

Neither boy looked up. Mom said, “Boys, ask for a balloon.”

One of the sons looked at me and said, “I’ll take an airplane” and returned to his game.

I addressed the second son and asked; “Did you want me to make you something?”

“Yea” was the response without any eye contact.

Loudly I stated; “I’ll come back when you have time to pay attention”. I moved to the next table.

As artists and entertainers, we offer a unique experience. We deserve respect and attention. There is no need for me to perform for an audience who is not interested in being engaged. We work very hard at our craft and most people are happy to enjoy the performance and the art.

Have respect for yourself and your customers. You have the responsibility to be professional. The customers should treat you as such.
